Father punched ex's car window

A FATHER of one put his fist through his ex-partner's car windscreen because he was upset that she had started dating another man, just a month after they had split, a court heard.

John O'Brien (34) had just received the news from his ex-partner, and he was overcome with jealousy and grief.

Judge James McDonnell said O'Brien had paid for the damage and he applied the probation act.

The defendant, of Wayside Cottages in Kiltiernan, admitted before Tallaght District Court to a charge of criminal damage.

The incident took place at Whitechurch Drive in Rathfarnham on June 3 last.

Garda Shane Whelan said there was an altercation between the defendant and his ex-partner. He lost his temper and punched the front windscreen of her car.

Garda Whelan said he later spoke to O'Brien who admitted he smashed the windscreen. He later paid €200 for the damage he caused.

The court heard O'Brien has seven previous convictions, all for road traffic matters.

Defence solicitor Kevin Tunney said O'Brien was in a relationship with the victim for six years and they had just broken up. On the day of this incident, she had told him she was going out with another man, just a month after their relationship had ended.

Mr Tunney said O'Brien was genuinely upset, and overcome with jealousy.

The court heard the defendant suffers from anxiety and insomnia and is seeing a doctor for help.

Judge McDonnell applied the probation act.
