TWO CRUCIAL eye-witnesses to the horrific road tragedy, in which eight people perished on the Inishowen peninsula of Co Donegal, have emerged.

A Garda source has confirmed to the Evening Herald that the two crucial eyewitnesses who were travelling together.

"A couple who were just driving out of Clonmany moments before the collision were overtaken by the Volkswagen Passat moments before the collision occurred and they had concerns for their safety," said the Garda source.

Gardai have revealed that moments before the fatal smash, the VW Passat collided side-on with an oncoming car driven by an elderly lady, also returning home from bingo in Buncrana.

The front wheel of her car was severed on impact causing the Passat to veer out of control and into the oncoming Toyota Corolla being driven by Mr Friel.

Both cars left the road and ended up down a slope with the Toyota on top of the Passat.
