Ex-boyfriend is cleared of rape

An eastern European man has been acquitted at the Central Criminal Court of raping his ex-girlfriend.

The accused had denied one count of rape and two counts of oral rape of the woman, also from eastern Europe, at a Dublin house on December 28, 2007.

The jury returned their verdicts of not guilty on all counts on day seven of the trial after three hours and 29 minutes deliberation.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy discharged the man from the indictment.

Kiefer op halts filming on 24

TV chiefs have halted production of the thriller 24 so star Kiefer Sutherland can undergo surgery.

Twentieth Century Fox Television would not comment on the nature of Sutherland's ailment, but he was reported to be suffering from a ruptured cyst.

The star plays counter-terrorist hero Jack Bauer in the series.

Newborn dies in house blaze

Seven people, including a three-day-old baby, have perished in a huge blaze at their home in suburban Chicago.

Sally Gist (18) her sons Rayshawn Gist, (3), and three-day-old Byron Reed, and her 16-year-old twin sister and brother died in the fire at the three-storey building, along with Sally's boyfriend and a family friend.
