Eviction not only answer to loan woes

The high-profile eviction of a Killiney couple from their home this week has cast attention on the issue of repossessions.

The image of pensioner Brendan Kelly and his wife Asta protesting in a tent outside their home shocked many people.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of their eviction, its coverage may have alarmed many people struggling to make mortgage repayments.

Some banks are currently witnessing one in eight of their mortgages in arrears.

Yet despite this, just 50 properties were repossessed in the final quarter of 2011.

The courts have to date -- to their credit -- only issued repossession orders when all other options have been exhausted.

Events in Killiney, while noteworthy, should not be a cause for widespread alarm.

There are options for those facing mortgage difficulties.
