Tributes have been paid to the family of a 10-year-old boy who died when his bicycle was involved in an accident with an SUV and horsebox.

The boy, named locally as Adam Lyons, is understood to have been cycling close to his home with two friends in the Ballymartin area on the Borris to Fenagh road at around 1.30pm on Thursday when the incident happened.

The driver of the SUV involved in the fatal accident performed CPR in a bid to safe the boy's life, until emergency services arrived at the scene.

A local doctor living close by was quickly on the scene followed by emergency services, including gardai from Borris, Carlow, Graiguenamanagh and Thomastown, along with an ambulance from Kilkenny.

The boy's friends were also involved in the incident but were not injured while cycling less than a kilometre from their homes.

However, the boy's injuries were so grave that he was airlifted to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin. He died later on Thursday night.

Local Fine Gael councillor Thomas Kinsella, who lives close to the Lyons family home, said: "The news of a local child passing away following an accident is devastating.

"It is absolutely horrendous for his family, who are just such fantastic people.

"Our thoughts are with the whole family.

"It is a very close-knit community and everyone is just so upset and numbed after what has happened.

"The jeep driver did trojan work to try to keep the boy alive, performing CPR until emergency services arrived."

The Borris Parish Community Alert Committee, of which Adam's father Eddie is a member, paid tribute to the young boy.

It said the committee would like to express its "sincere condolences to the Lyons family of Ballymartin on the passing of their 10-year-old son Adam after a tragic accident.

"His father Eddie is one of our committee members.

"Please spare a thought today for all involved in this tragic incident. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam."

A garda spokesperson confirmed the young boy's sad death. "The 10-year-old male cyclist seriously injured in a road traffic collision involving a cyclist and a jeep that occurred in the Ballymartin area of Borris, Co Carlow, passed away from his injuries at Temple Street Children's University Hospital," the spokesperson said.

"Gardai are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to this collision to come forward, particularly any road users who may have camera footage (including dash cam), who were travelling in the area at the time.

The driver of the SUV, a local man, was uninjured but is said to be deeply shocked. Both the driver and Adam's parents are well known to each other and live close to the crash area.
