Elderly siblings die in fire

AN ELDERLY brother and sister have died in a house fire.

The blaze was detected at the house shared by the brother and sister at East Ferry, Ballinacurra, east Cork, shortly after 5am today.

They were both in their late 70s and were pronounced dead at the scene despite desperate efforts to save them.

Neighbours spotted the smoke and flames at 5.15am and raised the alarm.

Units from Cobh and Midleton fire brigades raced to the scene and fought to bring the blaze under control.

When brigade personnel were finally able to gain entry to the house, both occupants were discovered in downstairs rooms.

It is suspected that both died from smoke inhalation.

Gardai believe the fire was accidental.
