SCHOOLS from across Ireland entered the best of their students' journalistic work – but in the end, there could be only one overall winner.
Elayna Keller from Our Lady's College, Drogheda, Co Louth, has scooped the overall prize at the second annual National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) Press Pass awards.
The writing competition was established to improve literacy and analytical skills.
More than 300 registered schools received 16 national newspapers and their local newspapers over a two-week period in autumn 2013.
Presenting the awards yesterday, Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, said that it was a "highly commendable" initiative.
"It not only helps students to improve their literacy skills, taking part in the programme also encourages the development of analytical skills and social awareness," he said.
