Earnings fall as work hours rise

We are working longer and earning less, according to the latest data on wages from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Average earning fell to €688.15 a week between the end of March and the end of June this year, down from €695.53 a year earlier, according to preliminary data from the CSO. That works out at €21.63 an hour.

The length of the average working week increased however, to 31.8 hours, in the same period. That's up slightly on the previous year. Finance Minister Michael Noonan has signalled that the Government will consider measures to help workers in the Budget.

Revised weekly earnings for the first three months of 2014 showed that average earnings fell slightly to €692.43.
