A DUMB and Dumber thief who broke into a toy store and stole children's charity money was caught on CCTV - and then left his fingerprints because the stockings he wore over his hands had holes in them.

The bungling burglar sparked a surge of sympathy and support for the owners of Pinocchio in Paul Street, Cork, with appalled shoppers pouring in after hearing about the robbery.

Shop owners Wyon and Christel Stansfeld said they were overwhelmed by the reaction of fellow traders who swamped them with offers of food, drinks and equipment.

The Dutch couple also received hundreds of messages of support via their social media pages.

Gardai are confident of identifying and catching the lone raider who broke into the shop at around 2am on Monday.

The burglary was one of five in that part of Cork last Sunday and Monday.

Having broken into Pinocchio, the thief smashed open two tills, taking a small cash float before stealing an iPod and an ISPCC collection box.

Yesterday, Wyon and Christel paid tribute to the professionalism of Cork gardai and the kindness of other traders.

"It was incredible - we had people arriving with coffees, scones, offers of lunch and traders wanting to lend us equipment," said Christel.

But there was more to come when shoppers flocked to the store. "It was wonderful - it meant a lot," said Wyon.

Pinocchio is a traditional toy store, offering quality wooden and educational toys.

Gardai recovered large quantities of fingerprints from around the tills.

"He wasn't the sharpest tack in the box," said Wyon.
