Dubliner survives Outback air crash

A YOUNG Dubliner who miraculously survived a fatal helicopter crash asked who won the All Ireland when he woke in a hospital bed.

Hugh Caren (23), from Dun Laoghaire, was seriously injured when the Robinson R44 helicopter crashed 180km south west of Newman in Western Australia on Saturday.

The pilot, Matthew Charles Wilson (37), from Queensland, died in the crash in the remote part of the Outback. The helicopter was destroyed.

Mr Caren was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital by the flying doctors service and was said to have suffered multiple fractures and an eye injury.

But after being airlifted to hospital, he was healthy enough to ask friends visiting him who won the crunch hurling tie.

A graduate of UCD, Mr Caren and the pilot were working with a South Australian owned geophysics surveying company when the crash happened.

Mr Caren's parents are in the process of travelling to Australia to be by his bedside.
