Dublin takes top tourism spot in TripAdvisor poll

DUBLIN is by far the best tourist destination in Ireland, ahead of Killarney, Cork and Westport, according to leading travel website TripAdvisor.

Ireland in general, however, is pushed down to 21st place in Europe for visitors, where Istanbul takes the top slot and Rome and London take second and third place.

And we don't even feature in the top 25 for the rest of the world.

Historical favourites such as Paris and New York have also lost some of their appeal in the list of the world's best destinations, dropping to seventh and 12th place in the list respectively. Five Munster destinations are included in the top 10.

The destinations of Killarney, Dingle, Cork and Tralee are in second, third, fourth and eighth places. Two other Leinster tourist spots also make it to the top ten, with Navan and Kilkenny taking ninth and 10th positions in the list.

The west of Ireland makes the list of ten most popular spots with Westport in fifth place, Galway in seventh and Donegal Town in sixth place.

"These awards are based on millions of reviews and ratings by those that really matter – travellers themselves" said James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesman. "As a city, Dublin has a culture and an appeal that few others can match, which is why, yet again, it has been recognised as one of the best destinations to visit in Europe."

Meanwhile, newcomer Istanbul is both the world's and Europe's top tourist stop in the latest Travellers' Choice Awards for Destinations announced by the TripAdvisor travel website.

Rome is the second most popular destination in both the world and Europe, with London third place in both leagues.
