Dublin on American tourists' hot spot list

Dublin's hotels and restaurants might finally have some cheer -- because the Yanks are coming.

A survey by influential holiday bookers found that many Americans intend to visit the Fair City this summer. The capital has made it into the top 10 of vacation cities worldwide.

The 2011 Hot Spots for Summer study was carried out by the powerful American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).

The tried and tested destinations of London, Rome, Paris and Cancun in Mexico top the list for the eighth consecutive year. Rounding out the top 10 were Punta Cana, Dublin, Barcelona, Venice, Sydney and Istanbul. This year was the first time that Sydney and Istanbul have joined the top 10.

When asked which countries are most popular with travelling Americans, Italy ranked first, with the UK in second place. Mexico ranked third, followed by France in fourth and the Caribbean in fifth place.
