Dublin footballer Bernard Brogan is set to walk down the aisle with his long-term girlfriend, the Herald can reveal.

It is news that will break hearts among fans of the Dublin GAA heartthrob, but those who know the couple were not surprised to hear the news.

Bernard popped the question to PR exec Kiera Doyle over the weekend while on a romantic break in Turkey.

While lapping up some winter sun the footballer got down on one knee last Saturday.

Ben Brogan, Bernard's uncle, said that the family are delighted for the happy couple.

"We'd like to send our best wishes from all the family, and Kiera will make a great addition to the family - she is very welcome," he said.

"Although Bernard's a good catch too," he joked.

The pair have been dating for the past three years but have known each other for a long time.

The All-Star player has made no secret of his wish to tie the knot at some stage when asked about his relationship.

It is still early days for the couple and no date has yet been set for the wedding, with a full football season ahead.

"I think it will probably depend on what happens in the championship," Ben said.

Previously the Dublin star opened up about the key to their success as a couple, putting their strong relationship down to their shared love of sport.

"She's a sport-mad girl. She was a great basketball player and swimmer and loves the GAA and rugby, so she loves the journey," he said.

"We go to some great matches and have great craic."

He also acknowledged that there is some sacrifice involved in dating a GAA county player.

"Obviously, when I'm training there is not much partying or drinking, so it's just normal stuff - the cinema and watching films. It's just nice, no major messing. Kiera's always there bringing me right back down to earth," he said.

The Herald understands that the loved-up pair are now house-hunting.

Bernard will have former teammate Eamon Fennell to lean on for advice in the coming months, as he was the latest Dublin player to wed his other half. Fennell and his wife, Fiona Creely, celebrated their nuptials at a glitzy bash in the prestigious K Club in Co Kildare in December.
