Drunk driver injured student

A drunk driver who knocked down a UCD student has had his sentence adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Oliver Dunne told gardai he had been thrown out of his marital home and had planned to sleep in his car the night he hit Mr Cian McGovern, leaving him with a permanent knee injury. Dunne (32) of The Ash, Parkview, Stepaside, Dublin 18, refused to give a breath sample when arrested after crashing his car into a wall at Ely Place in the city centre.

The father-of-one pleaded guilty to charges including dangerous driving at Harcourt Garda Station on November 29, 2008.



Breakthrough for MS patients

Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are more than twice as likely to have abnormal blood flow from the brain as healthy people, according to initial results from a trial.

Scientists said they were "cautiously optimistic" about the research, which suggests a link between narrowing of veins in the head and neck and the neurological condition. The results emerged from preliminary data of a randomised clinical study at the University of Buffalo in the US.



Cutting It star joins soap cast

Cutting It star Jason Merrells is to join the cast of Emmerdale, it was announced.

Merrells, who starred as Gavin Ferraday in the hairdressing drama, will play handsome business tycoon Declan in the ITV1 soap.

The character will acquire a stake in the Home Farm estate when murderess Natasha Wylde (Amanda Donohoe) finds herself in need of investors.



TVs smashed in store attack

US police said a 23-year-old man grabbed a baseball bat inside a Wal-Mart store and smashed 29 flat-screen televisions.

Police in Lilburn near Atlanta, Georgia charged Westley Strellis with 29 counts of criminal damage to property in the second degree.

Witnesses told police that Strellis grabbed a metal baseball bat from the sporting goods section, then walked to the electronics department and destroyed the TVs on display.
