Drug convict hid phones in cell

A man serving a 14-year sentence for possession of almost €400,000 of drugs has been given a further three-month jail term after prison officers discovered a stash of mobile phones and chargers in his cell.

Kevin McCormack (24) told gardai the eight phones were already in the hole in the cell floor when he was moved to it 18 months earlier but he took responsibility for his own phone, which he also kept there.

McCormack, of Edenmore Crescent, Coolock, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to unlawful possession of a mobile phone at Mountjoy Prison on December 11, 2008.

McCormack was handed the 14-year sentence in January 2007 after he was forced by drug dealers to carry cannabis valued over €50,000 in April 2006 six months after he "lost" their cocaine valued €338,000 when caught by gardai with it in October 2005.

The final three years of the sentence were suspended and with remission he is due for release in April 2015.
