Driver admits to hitting OAPs

A man has admitted driving a car which knocked down three pensioners resulting, in one of them having his leg amputated.

Eric Ryan (79), from Corbally, Limerick, was seriously injured following the incident in Parteen, Co Clare, last week while his friends Willie Barry (77), a retired garda, and Dermot O'Brien, who is aged in his 70s, were also injured.

At Limerick District Court this week, Judge Eugene O'Kelly was told that Michael Sheehan (26) of Cliona Park, Moyross, has admitted driving the Hyundai Accent car which hit the three men.

Sheehan appeared before a special court sitting at the weekend after he was charged with burglary offences, which allegedly happened in Aherina and Doonass on the same day as the collision. Judge O'Kelly refused a bail application and remanded the defendant in custody until October 14.

Car bomb kills 11 in Baghdad

A car bomb exploded in a mostly Shi'ite Muslim neighbourhood of southeastern Baghdad, killing 11 people. The violence came a day after Baghdad witnessed one of its bloodiest days since US-led air strikes against Islamic State insurgents in Iraq began in August. The sources said the explosion, which also wounded 27 people, occurred near a local market.

Stem cells to cure blindness

Scientists have found a possible treatment for the most common form of blindness using special stem cells found on the front surface of the eye. Research at the University of Southampton, published in the journal PLOS ONE, showed that stem cells can be gathered from the corneal limbus. This part of the eye is a narrow gap between the transparent cornea and white sclera.

The singer uses the f-word regularly during the song, which has been censored for radio play.
