Drive to woo surfers

IT'S not quite Hawaii, but the west coast of Ireland is being hailed as one of the world's best surfing destinations.

Discover Ireland has launched a new campaign aimed at attracting surfers from around the world, along with Irish novices, to hit the waves from now until next summer.

The country already has a world class reputation as a top surfing destination, thanks to the rugged coastline, long sandy beaches and wide variety of reef and break points.

The west coast boats a number of surfing schools and instructors. Typically, the surfing season begins in autumn and runs right the way until May, when the conditions allow for the biggest waves and the clearest water.
