Drive to find aid volunteers

A recruitment drive has been launched for skilled volunteers who want to be deployed to humanitarian emergencies around the world.

Engineers, public health and logistic experts are among the people needed by the Rapid Response Corps (RRC).

Workers' threat of hunger strike

employees at a frozen food plant will join a colleague on hunger strike if bosses refuse to reinstate or compensate three sacked staff, union officials have warned.

Green Isle shop steward Jim Wyse began his protest on Wednesday over the firm's failure to accept Labour Court recommendations to settle the row. Kildare-based Green Isle said the dismissals followed a company probe into breaches of its IT policy relating to pornography and copyright material.

NZ backs Oz whale warning

New Zealand said it would join Australia in seeking legal action against Japan over its annual whale hunt in the Antarctic if negotiations failed to produce a diplomatic solution.

Australia's prime minister Kevin Rudd said his Government would take Japan to international court over its research programme that kills hundreds of whales a year if Tokyo did not agree to stop the hunt by November.
