Drive-ban grandad had just lost his job

A GRANDFATHER caught driving without insurance just yards from his home was bringing home his tools after losing his job, a court heard.

Damien McDonnell (45) has seven previous convictions for driving without insurance and he was serving a 30-year driving ban at the time of the offence.

Judge Denis McLoughlin disqualified McDonnell from driving for 30 years and imposed 240 hours of community service in lieu of five months in prison.

McDonnell, of Donomore Avenue, Tallaght, admitted before Tallaght District Court to driving without insurance or a driving licence.

Michael Hennessy, defending, said McDonnell has always worked in the motor trade but the garage he worked in closed and he was moving his tools.
