Drinkers stuck in remote pub

The freezing Arctic conditions delivered an unexpected bonus for some New Year's Eve revellers after they were forced to spend three days snowed in at England's highest pub.

Some 60 guests had booked to see in the New Year at the Tan Hill Inn, which stands at a height of more than 1,700ft above sea level in the Yorkshire Dales. But heavy, relentless snowstorms on New Year's Eve left the guests stranded in the pub. Resourceful landlady Tracy Daly (45), her husband Mike Peace (63) and two staff sprang into action to keep the guests watered and fed.

Convoy allowed to enter Gaza

An international aid convoy will be allowed to enter the Gaza Strip after organisers struck a deal with Egyptian authorities over its transit route.

Egypt's state-owned Middle East News Agency said a ship carrying the 150-vehicle convoy with hundreds of tons of humanitarian supplies will be unloaded at the Egyptian port of El-Arish after arriving. It said the British-based group Viva Palestina is accompanied by 528 activists who will also travel to Gaza.
