IRELAND'S first double-lung transplant patient has died, five years after the operation.
Jack Mullery (58), from Rosses Point, Co Sligo, who suffered from emphysema, underwent the five-hour double lung transplant in the Mater Hospital in January 2006.
The father-of-five, who worked as a senior training officer with FAS, died peacefully at the same hospital this week.
He had been on the transplant list for seven months before the operation, required oxygen daily and was confined to a wheelchair.
But the surgery, carried out by the head of the transplant unit, Freddie Wood, and physician, Jim Egan, turned his life around.
