Dissident Republican group is blamed for Phoenix Park bomb

THE self-styled Oglaigh na hEireann is believed to have hidden the 'milk churn bomb' in the Phoenix Park.

The massive bomb scare saw most of the park cordoned off as the army dismantled the device.

Anti-terrorist officers are working on the theory that the bomb was hidden there in a panic as gardai carried out search and disrupt operations at the weekend.

There are fears that the bomb was designed to kill and comes in the wake of a 600lb bomb that was discovered in a van in Newry.

The Dublin device was found by a walker in a small wooded area of the park known as Quarry Lake on Monday night.

Bomb disposal officers were at the scene for 12 hours before it was declared safe at 10.40am yesterday.

Gardai are now examining the remains of the device but have not yet been able to determine its exact size.

Although the main line of investigation is that the milk churn was left in the park so that it could be collected at a later date, gardai have also noted that it was located close the residence of the American Ambassador and the Government property Farmleigh House.
