Former child star and singer Demi Lovato has been hospitalised following a suspected heroin overdose.

The troubled 25-year-old American singer has fought addiction to cocaine, opioids and alcohol for years and was admitted to rehab in 2010 for substance abuse.

Last night, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that it responded to an emergency call for a 25-year-old woman in the Hollywood Hills in which she was reportedly treated with Narcan, a treatment for opioid overdoses.

The entertainment website TMZ reported that she was rushed to a Hollywood hospital around noon yesterday, local time.

Her condition was last night described as stable.

The singer, whose showbiz career began when she appeared as a child on the Disney show Barney And Friends, released a song last month called Sober in which she revealed she had in fact, fallen off the wagon.

Prior to her stint in rehab when she was still a teenager, she said she "couldn't go 30 minutes in an hour without cocaine" in a tell-all documentary in 2012 called Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated.

She also revealed developing an eating disorder when she was just eight years old.

Representatives for Lovato did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Lovato performed her song Sober as recently as Sunday night when she played the California Mid-State Fair.

However, she struggled to remember the words during the performance.

She first went into rehab at the age of 18 and has spoken about how addiction problems run in her family and has had occasions where she thought she was overdosing.
