Defaulters pay €13.7m in taxman settlements

A CLAIRVOYANT, a plumber, and an engineer were among tax defaulters who made six-figure settlements with the Revenue Commissioners.

Around 100 people made agreements with the Revenue in the final three months of 2013, the tax defaulters' list shows.

Total settlements on the list amounted to €13.77m. The register had people employed in occupations including building, baking, health, stone crushing, and even embroidery.


Thirty-eight of these settlements were for amounts in excess of €100,000, while five of them exceeded €500,000.

Psychic medium Carol Byrne, from Oylegate in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, made a settlement of €163,000 with the Revenue.

The biggest agreement of €992,000 was made by Barry Murphy,a heating and plumbing contractor from Blackthorn Drive, Blackstone Bridge, Killeens, in Co Cork.

This included €281,000 in penalties for under-declaration of income tax and VAT amounting to nearly €500,000.

Mulleady Civil Engineering, Main St, Drumlish Co Longford made a settlement of €762,000 including interest and penalties for under-declaration of VAT and contracts tax.
