Gardai investigating the death of a newborn baby believe the boy was alive at birth.
Officers do not believe that the child was deliberately harmed and say they are treating the case with sensitivity.
The tragedy came to light after a woman went to Mayor General Hospital in Castlebar at 5am yesterday. Doctors became alarmed after discovering that she had recently given birth.
Medics contacted gardai who immediately called to the woman's house in the village of Ayle, between Westport and Castlebar. Inside the house they discovered the body of a baby boy. Gardai confirmed that the infant was full term. It is understood that the child was not stillborn.
A garda spokesperson said that they are "investigating all the circumstances surrounding the discovery".
