A YOUNG dad of two was subjected to a frenzied knife attack in a Coolock housing estate.
Dean McDonnell (24) is recovering in hospital today after being stabbed five times in the back.
The shocking assault happened in the driveway of a house on Glin Road at 11pm last night.
Mr McDonnell had been out with his partner Amanda O'Donnell when a man called to his home on Macroom Avenue demanding to know where he was.
His mother Fran explained that the individual went into a frenzy when he discovered that Mr McDonnell wasn't home.
"When he found out he wasn't in he slashed the tyres on Amanda's car in the driveway," she told The Herald.
"I was out at the time but my other son rang Dean to tell him what had happened and he left the pub to come home to make sure everybody was okay.
"But he bumped into the fella around the corner and he attacked Dean."
Mr McDonnell has a seven-month-old daughter with Amanda, and a seven-year-old son from a previous relationship.
His daughter Ruby was asleep in the house when the man came looking for him and started banging in the door.
Mr McDonnell was stabbed in the back in the driveway of a house on Glin Road. He screamed for help and the owner of the house tried to stem the flow of blood from his wounds with a towel until an ambulance arrived.
He was then rushed to Beaumont Hospital where his injuries were described as not life threatening.
His partner Amanda said that she received a call after Dean left to walk home.
"I got a call from Dean later saying he had been attacked on the way home. I couldn't believe it," she said.
His mother Fran said that the father-of-two is hardworking individual and they can't understand why he was attacked.
"Dean is up every morning at 7am to go to work up at the Cadbury's factory," she said.
"He is no trouble to anyone and we can't think why he was singled out for this attack."
The scene of the attack was sealed off today pending a forensic examination by members of the garda technical bureau, and gardai say they are following a definite line of inquiry.
The garden wall of the house where the attack took place was heavily bloodstained, and a bloodied towel as well as items of clothing could be seen discarded in the driveway, as well as coins and a key.
