Dad-of-six 'killed in drug feud'

A FATHER-of-six was shot several times in the head and chest as part of a brutal drug feud, gardai believe.

The body of Christy Daly (47) was found dumped in a drain in a bog near Clara, Co Offaly.

Detectives believe that the body may have been there for up to a week.

A post-mortem has established that he was shot a number of times in the head and chest.

Gardai believe that Mr Daly may have been targeted after drugs went missing in the Tullamore area.

"One line of inquiry is related to the outbreak of violence involving members of the Travelling community in the area," a source said.

Officers are also investigating a link to sex assault allegations against the deceased by a number of women.

Mr Daly from Ballycumber, Co Offaly was well known to gardai and had just been released from jail one month ago. He had completed a three-year sentence for false imprisonment.

Senior sources said last night that it was too early to pinpoint an exact motive for the murder.

"However, we will also be revisiting the sex allegations levelled against the deceased, which did not result in a criminal prosecution."

A caravan – in which Mr Daly was believed to have been living – and two cars were found burnt-out just 100m from where the victim's body was discovered in a six foot drain.

He had not been seen since just after Christmas but detectives outlined that he visited relatives in Navan on December 29.

Gardai believe he may have been murdered after he had returned home that night or early the following morning.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have seen a caravan and two vehicles burnt out at this location," said Supt David Talyor. "We are not in a position to give specific dates.

"But what I would say is that Sunday December 29 is an important date, and the days leading up to that."

The area where Mr Daly's body was found is an isolated area with limited access.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a preliminary examination at the scene before the body was removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore for a post mortem.

Mr Daly, who formerly lived in Clara and Ballycumber, is the father of six children, ranging in age from seven years to 23. He was one of a family of eleven.

An incident room has been set up at Tullamore station where a case conference was held last night.

Gardai said a number of people have already come forward with information but have asked anybody with information to contact them at 057 9327600 or phone the confidential line, 1800 666111.
