Dad jailed over ¤1.5k cannabis

A GRIEVING father who started smoking cannabis after his son was murdered has been jailed for eight months in prison.

Father-of-three Patrick Byrne (59) admitted before Dublin District Court to possession of cannabis resin as well as having the drug for sale or supply. The cannabis was found after gardai obtained a warrant and searched Byrne's home at Lower Oriel Street, Dublin 1, on August 31 last year. The court heard the street value of the cannabis was €1,450.



Two held over monkey killings

Police say two Indonesian palm oil workers have been arrested for allegedly slaughtering at least 20 endangered orangutans and proboscis monkeys.

A police spokesman said that plantation owners eager to protect crops on Borneo Island from being raided allegedly paid the men up to $100 for each primate killed.

He says the men admitted to chasing down the animals, then shooting, stabbing or hacking them to death with machetes. The men face up to five years in prison.



Prince Harry rents a Harley

Those lucky enough to have a brush with Prince Harry during his first visit to Las Vegas say he was as down-to-earth as any other 27-year-old who appreciates a Harley and a night out with friends.

The prince is spending several weeks training on Apache helicopters at Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field in southern Arizona, about six hours away from Sin City.

Dan Dvorak of Hacienda Harley-Davidson said the royal showed up in jeans when he stopped by an Arizona dealership to rent a bike.



Hendrix 'best guitar player'

Jimi Hendrix was named the greatest guitar player in history by Rolling Stone magazine in a list compiled by a panel of music experts and top guitar players.

"Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: he manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage," said Grammy-winning guitarist Tom Morello in the magazine, citing Hendrix's Purple Haze and The Star-Spangled Banner as key tracks.
