Woman's gun 'for protection'

A WOMAN who kept an air pistol in a stocking on top of her wardrobe for "her own protection" as she owed drug money has been given a two-year suspended sentence.

Anne-Marie Martin initially claimed a friend gave her the gun for Christmas for "no purpose" and said they "were just buzzing off it".

The 35-year-old then admitted to gardai she had a drug problem, was under financial pressure and had the gun for her own protection.

Martin of Mayston Crescent, St Margaret's Road, Finglas pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to unlawful possession of a firearm at her home on February 3, 2011.

Martin had no previous convictions and the judge suspended the entire sentence.
