Woman due in court over knife death at apartment

A WOMAN was expected to appear in court today in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in Galway.

The victim was named locally as Kevin Joyce (59) who had been living in Salthill for about a year.

Shocked locals said that Mr Joyce had returned to Ireland after spending most of his life working in Seattle in the US.

His body was discovered on an open rooftop veranda shared by a number of apartments in a block close to the Seapoint Amusement Centre -- formerly the Seapoint Ballroom.

Gardai responding to a 999 call made the discovery at the first floor veranda at 10.30pm on Sunday.

Mr Joyce had sustained numerous stab wounds to his upper body and was bleeding heavily as he lay in a collapsed state.

He died in the apartment.

A woman in her 30s was discovered in a distressed state. A knife was also recovered.

The woman was arrested and taken to Mill Street Garda Station in Galway city and formally charged last night. Gardai declined to reveal details of the charge.

Gardai carried out door-to- door enquiries in an attempt to build a picture of the circumstances that led to Mr Joyce being fatally stabbed.

Local people said they only became aware of the tragedy yesterday morning. One publican who had come to know the victim, was shocked to hear of his violent death.

"Kevin was a nice, gentle sort of a fella and there was no harm in him. He was fond of a drink, but that was about all," said the publican who declined to be identified.

Gardai questioned a number of locals and visitors to Salthill who were in the vicinity of Upper Salthill after midnight. The resort was busy with big crowds in the area for the end of the Galway Races and the start of the bank holiday.

Witnesses are asked to contact the incident room at 091-538070 or Salthill Garda Station at 091-514720.
