A banned driver who was spotted by gardai behind the wheel of a car has been jailed for four months.

Joseph Richards (26) had three previous uninsured driving convictions and "no excuse" for his behaviour.

Judge David McHugh also disqualified him for six years.

Richards, of Aylward Green, Finglas, admitted driving without insurance or a licence when he app-eared before Blanchardstown District Court.

Sgt Geraldine McManigan said gardai were on patrol in Cloonlara Drive, Finglas, last December 7 when they saw Richards driving a 2008-registered car.

She said officers were aware that Richards was a banned driver.

The sergeant said he drove away at speed and was later stopped in Tolka Valley Green.

The defendant, a father-of-three, had received a five-year driving ban in 2014, the court heard.

Defence solicitor Simon Fleming said Richards had been in trouble when younger, but had dealt with his drug difficulties.

He said his client had "no excuse" for driving, and asked the judge not to jail him, saying he had kept his "nose clean" more recently.
