A SERIAL shoplifter who hid €187 worth of stolen cosmetics in her umbrella reminded a judge of Disney's Mary Poppins, a court heard.
Michelle Ruth (37) was given a six-month suspend- ed sentence at Dublin District Court when she admitted a number of offences.
Ruth, a mother-of-two, of Spring Garden Street, Dublin 3, pleaded guilty to theft and public order charges at Dublin District Court.
Judge Anthony Halpin suspended the sentence for a year after hearing Ruth already had 114 previous convictions.
A garda sergeant told the court Ruth went to Hamilton Long Pharmacy on O'Connell Street and placed a number of items in her umbrella and passed all points of payment.
Judge Halpin said he was "thinking of the caricature of Mary Poppins".
In a separate incident, she was on a stationary bus at Westmoreland Street when she began shouting abuse at gardai through the window. She also began shouting at other people on the bus and was removed.
She also admitted stealing boxes of perfume worth more than €700 in several thefts from Debenham's on Henry Street.
Defence solicitor Michael Kelleher said Ruth had been doing well for a time but got some "serious news" about an illness and had taken it badly.
