Two face court over huge find of heroin

TWO west Dublin men were due to appear in court today in relation to the largest heroin seizure of the year.

The men, aged 26 years and 28 years and from the Clonsilla and Tyrellstown areas of the northside, have been detained in Clondalkin Garda Station since Tuesday when they were arrested in Kill, Co Kildare.

Gardai said they were arrested with two other men when 12kg of heroin was seized after a planned surveillance operation at the Naas Road.

As part of the intelligence-led operation, detectives from the Garda National Drugs Unit put a surveillance operation in place on two men they suspected were about to become involved in a drugs delivery.

The men met two others in a garage in Kill on Tuesday, where gardai believe the heroin haul was to be collected. Just as the handover was about to take place, gardai moved in and searched the men's vehicles.

Two other men -- a 51-year-old and a man in his late 20s -- were arrested but later released without charge late on Tuesday night.

The haul, which was destined for the Dublin market, is the biggest individual seizure of heroin for two years.

It brings to 33kg the amount of heroin seized this year; with a total combined value of €6.6m.
