Thief tried to steal empty money box

A MAN attempted to steal an empty cash box from a cash delivery vehicle, not knowing there was a large amount of money in the back, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard.

Philip Caffery (32) of Henrietta House, Henrietta Street, tried to smash the vehicle's window with a hammer but fled when the cash delivery men saw him.

He pleaded guilty to attempted theft at Henrietta Street on June 7, 2008. Judge Tony Hunt said that the offence showed "a lack of cop-on or finesse" and put the matter back until March for a probation report.

The court heard how delivery men took cash into a Spar store and filled the ATM before taking the empty box back to their car. Then they went back inside to get some coffee.

Caffery and a friend had seen this and, assuming the box still contained money, began smashing in the side windows on the driver's side but they fled when the Chubb workers spotted them when they came out of the shop. A detective identified Caffery from CCTV footage from outside the shop and arrested him shortly afterwards.
