Tenant in jail after smashing landlord's glass door

A TENANT who kicked in a glass door at his landlord's house was highly aggressive and carrying a large kitchen knife at the time, a court heard.

Ruzmond Muwaniri (21) eventually dropped the knife when gardai told him to do so.

A judge sentenced Muwaniri to nine months in prison.

The defendant, with an address at Enniskerry Road, Sandyford, admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to charges of criminal damage and possession of a dangerous weapon on December 29 last year.

Garda Sergeant Peadar McCann said gardai received a call that the defendant had kicked in a glass pane of glass in his landlord's front door.

Sgt McCann said Muwaniri was highly aggressive and was carrying a large kitchen knife. He dropped it when gardai shouted at him to do so.

Ruairi Staines, defending Muwaniri, handed a psychiatric report into the court. Though it stated that Muwaniri does not suffer a psychiatric illness, Mr Staines said the defendant has a number of problems, including a drink problem which he is trying to address.

Mr Staines said Muwaniri plans to live with his aunt in Co Kildare when he is released from prison.

The defendant also admitted to two counts of drunken driving. Judge Ann Ryan banned him from driving for six years and sentenced him to nine months in prison.
