Teen football star abusive to garda

A TALENTED Gaelic footballer who told a garda to "f**k off" is a different person when he's sober, his lawyer told a court.

The 16-year-old shouted a string of abuse at the garda after he approached him to check on him after he saw him walking drunkenly along Ballymun Road.

A judge ordered a probation report, saying the youth may have a drink problem and would benefit from the help of the probation service. He adjourned sentencing to a date in September.

The teenager admitted before a sitting of a children's court at Blanchardstown District Court to public drunkenness and threatening and abusive behaviour. The incident took place in Ballymun on April 25.

Garda Sgt Damien Galligan said a garda who knows the youth stopped him on Ballymun Road. He was very drunk and very aggressive to the garda and shouted and swore at him. He has no previous convictions.

Mairead White, defending, said the youth had never been in trouble before. She told the court that she had spoken to Garda Sweeney who acknowledged the defendant is a different person when he is sober.
