Teacher's 'thug with boots' jibe at garda

A "BRILLIANT" poet and teacher has been convicted of abusing a garda he called a "thug with big thick boots".

Patrick Duffy (60) became aggressive towards the officer who encountered him outside a shop in Dublin city centre.

Judge Hugh O'Donnell fined him €150 after Duffy, of Newcourt, New Street, Dublin 8, admitted using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour at Kevin Street on November 19, 2011.

Garda Shane Noone told the court he was in a patrol car when he came across Duffy who shouted through the window: "You are a thug with your big thick boots."

"That wasn't a very nice thing to say to the garda," Judge O'Donnell said. "There are no extenuating circumstances for insulting a garda who is doing his job."
