TWO teenage university students caught with cannabis for sale or supply in St Stephen's Green have asked a judge to leave them without criminal records.

Jason Costello (18) and Cianan Simpson (18), described in court as having "good academic prospects", had €800 worth of the drug between them when arrested.

Judge Michael Walsh adjourned their case for six months, saying he would not make a final decision until after their exams.

Costello, of Kelly's Bay Beach, and Simpson, of Quay Street, both Skerries, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to sell or supply last June 10. Dublin District Court heard gardai became suspicious and approached the two and searched them.

Probation reports were presented in court which stated the accused were at low risk of re-offending.

"Costello has recognised and realised the seriousness of the situation he finds himself in," defence solicitor Paul Hannon said.

Both defendants were from "very good families" and the incident had been a "shock to their systems".

They had made a "mistake that a lot of young people around that age could make", Mr Hannon added.
