Student grew drug in garden

A HORTICULTURAL student who was growing cannabis plants in his girlfriend's back garden has been given a suspended sentence.

Mark Kelly (31) was not running a sophisticated growing operation, a court heard.

The street value of the cannabis was €2,400, but gardai accepted this figure does not take into account the condition or size of the plants, which were small.

Judge David McHugh fined Kelly €300 and sentenced him to three months in prison suspended for one year.

Kelly, of Cloonlara Drive, Finglas, admitted at Blanchardstown District Court to cultivating the drug at Fairlawn Road in Finglas on August 1 last year.

He had smoked cannabis in the past but was never a regular user.
