Student abused gardai at beach

A STUDENT who shouted abuse at gardai during an incident at a Dublin beach became irate when they took his drink off him, a court heard.

Anthony O'Connor (24) was enjoying the sunshine with a group of friends on Portmarnock beach when he was stopped by gardai. Judge Dermot Dempsey ordered O'Connor to complete 200 hours community service in lieu of one month in prison.

The defendant, of Carndonagh Park in Donaghmede, admitted before Swords District Court to threatening and abusive behaviour.

Garda Darragh Hynes said he was on patrol along the beaches in Portmarnock on July 18 when he came across a group of youths. He said the group was drinking alcohol so he took it from them.

The defendant was unhappy about this and started shouting verbal abuse at gardai. The gardai said that O'Connor has since apologised for his behaviour.
