Shotgun man jailed

A MAN has been jailed for 18 months at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin for the possession of a sawn-off shotgun and ammunition.

Paul Maguire (25) of Drumleek South, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, had pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of a sawn-off, 12-gauge side-by-side shotgun and two 12-gauge Eley shotgun cartridges at Ecco Road, Dundalk in August 2010.

Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding, said the court would impose a sentence of five years with three-and-a-half years suspended, having been impressed by evidence of Maguire's "wholly exceptional behaviour" during the case.
