A mother-of-seven who stole accessories that she hid under her clothing was struggling after she lost her home, a court heard.

Jennifer Byrne (33), of Abbeylea Avenue, Swords, was stopped by security staff as she left the store.

Judge Gerard Jones ordered Byrne to enter into a peace bond for 12 months.

The defendant admitted before Swords District Court to stealing accessories worth €27 from Penneys in Swords last June 12.

Gda Alan Clarke said Byrne concealed the items in her clothing and walked out without making any effort to pay.

She was stopped by security staff and the goods were recovered in a saleable condition.

The court heard that Byrne has six previous convictions, though none for theft.

Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy said that at the time of this incident Byrne and her family had lost their home.

Ms D'Arcy said Byrne is the mother of seven children.

She added that the defendant was very sorry for her behaviour, and she asked the judge to treat her as leniently as possible.
