A scaffolder who was 'caught red-handed' transporting €407,000 worth of cannabis herb has been sentenced to five years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Alan Boylan (25) drove a white Ford Transit van which contained eight boxes of the drug to Nevinstown Lane in Swords and helped transfer the boxes to a Ford Mondeo.
Boylan of Faussaugh Road, Cabra, pleaded guilty to possession of 634kg of cannabis herb for sale or supply on September 1, 2009, at Nevinstown Lane, Swords, Co Dublin.
Pope fails to end Church rift
Pope Benedict XVI declined to end a rift with a group of conservative Catholics banished from the Catholic Church in 1975 for opposing the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
The Vatican informed the group, the Society of Pius X, that it had one more month to accept basic doctrinal points required to return to the Catholic fold, the Holy See said yesterday.

Starving boy locked in closet
A Florida couple locked an extremely malnourished boy inside a closet as punishment for stealing food they were withholding from him, police said.
The police report says the 12-year-old boy was unlawfully caged in a closet, though it doesn't say whether there was a cage inside the closet.
The boy has been treated at a hospital for malnutrition and dehydration.
Jail records show Michael Marshall (38) and Sharon Glass (48) were charged on Thursday with three counts of aggravated child abuse.
Man bitten on arm by shark
A man was bitten in the arm by a shark off Florida's eastern coast amid several reports of sharks in water.
Martin County officials said a bull shark bit the man multiple times in the arm on Thursday afternoon. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Lifeguards had called swimmers and surfers out of the water on Thursday twice after sharks were spotted in the area.
