Robbery bid accused granted bail

THESE are the two young men accused of attempted robbery at a post office in west Dublin.

Eugene Byrne (20) and Ian Mansfield (23) were arrested on the M6 in Co Westmeath after gardai intercepted a motorbike.

Judge David McHugh remanded the pair on continuing bail to appear before the court again in May for the DPP's directions on the charge.

Byrne, of Lohunda Downs, Clonsilla, and Mansfield, of Fortlawn Drive, Blanchardstown, appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with attempted robbery contrary to common law.

The alleged incident happened at Clonsilla Post Office on December 16.

It is alleged that two men armed with a handgun and a hammer threatened workers at a post office.

They demanded cash but left the scene empty-handed on a motorcycle.

ADJOURNMENT

Gda Sgt Mary Doherty said that the DPP's directions remain outstanding on the charges.

Defence solicitors Valerie Buckley and Fiona Brennan said there was consent to a six week adjournment for the DPP's directions.
