Reveller yelled 'rat' at witness to fight

A reveller started shouting "rat" at another man outside a restaurant after the man identified his friend to gardai as having been involved in an earlier row.

Jason Cooke (21) had been out celebrating a friend's birthday and was getting fast-food on the way home when the public order breach took place.

Judge Anthony Halpin fined Cooke €500.

Cooke, of Donomore Crescent in Tallaght, admitted before Tallaght District Court to threatening and abusive behaviour.

Restaurant

The incident took place outside McDonald's restaurant, Belgard Square, Tallaght, shortly after 3am on September 10.

Garda Stephen Nealon said he was called to the restaurant following reports of a large public order incident.

He said the area had calmed by the time he arrived, but there was a large group standing outside.

The garda said a witness came over to him and identified Cooke's friend as having been involved in the altercation.

When gardai approached Cooke's friend, Cooke started shouting "rat" at the witness.

The court heard the defendant has one previous conviction, for criminal damage.
