Reveller accused of headbutting clubgoer

A REVELLER headbutted a clubgoer in the face, leaving him with a broken nose and concussion in a late-night assault, it has been alleged.

David Hunt (29) is accused of striking the man, who then fell to the floor, hitting his head and becoming concussed.

A judge said she would not decide whether the case was too serious for the District Court until she heard more evidence of the background to the incident.

Hunt, of Ballinteer Court, Ballinteer, is charged with assault causing harm to Pudhpak Gupta at Club M, Cope Street on February 15 last year. The DPP has given directions for summary trial of the case in Dublin District Court only in the event that the accused pleads guilty to committing the assault.

If he denies the charge, it will be sent to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to be tried by a judge and jury.

Judge Ann Ryan asked for an outline of the allegations to consider jurisdiction in the case.

A garda sergeant said gardai were called to the nightclub at 2.30am and met security staff who said a man had been assaulted inside by the defendant.

It was alleged that Hunt had headbutted the other man, causing a fracture to his nose, bruising to both eyes and a chip to his tooth. He had also suffered concussion when he hit the back of his head as he fell.

He had since undergone an operation to his nose in his home country. A medical report was handed in.

The sergeant said she was unaware of the background to the incident when asked by the judge. Judge Ryan said she needed more details before she could decide on jurisdiction and adjourned the case to July 14
