Rape jury fails to reach verdict

A jury in the trial of an English man accused of raping his pregnant ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in County Clare was sent home last night after failing to reach a verdict.

The man (44) has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to multiple rape charges, false imprisonment, a gun possession charge, aggravated burglary and making threats.

He previously admitted assaulting the woman but denied hitting her with a gun. All the offences are alleged to have occurred on September 9, 2007. The jury was due to return to court today.
