Prisoner scalded with kettle of water

A PRISONER has been given a four-year suspended sentence for throwing a kettle of scalding water over a fellow inmate at Wheatfield Prison.

Joseph McCarthy (26), of Grange View Road, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to Matthew Tuohey on May 30, 2012.

Judge Desmond Hogan noted that McCarthy, who is serving a six-year sentence for burglary and theft, is not due for release until February 2016 and that there was a "history of animus" between the two men.

The court was told that Tuohey ran to the pool room after the attack and tried to pull his T-shirt off as it was sticking to him.

He went to the prison surgery and a week later to the burns unit of St James' Hospital, where his back was treated with daily dressings for three weeks.
