Prison for man with €2k drugs

A MAN found with €2,300 of cannabis herb in his home has been jailed.

Shane Knowd (22) of Thornfield Square, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession for sale or supply of the drugs at his home on February 2, 2011.

Garda Daniel Matheson told the court that during a search of the house members of the Ballyfermot Drugs Unit found 192g of cannabis herb under a shrub.

Garda Matheson said they also found weighing scales on the premises.

Judge Martin Nolan imposed a sentence of three years imprisonment but suspended the final two years.

Mammoth body found in Siberia

A RUSSIAN scientist says a well-preserved mammoth has been found in the permafrost of northern Siberia.

Alexei Tikhonov of the St Petersburg Zoology Institute said yesterday that his team spent five days extracting the body from frozen mud on the Sopochnaya Karga cape.

Tikhonov said the mammoth was "possibly" killed by a human or a mammoth.

Gay TV roles at all-time high

THE number of gay and bisexual characters on scripted TV in the US is at its highest-ever level, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The 17th annual Where We Are On TV report released by GLAAD found that 4.4pc of actors appearing regularly on prime-time network drama and comedy series during the 2012-13 season will portray lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender characters. This is up from 2.9pc in 2011.

Leak causes street collapse

A STREET in downtown Warsaw has partially collapsed during the construction of a subway line and builders are pumping hundreds of tons of cement under it to keep nearby buildings upright.

A water pipeline leaked early yesterday near a station being built on the Warsaw subway's second line. A few dozen yards of asphalt sunk and an office building and an apartment building nearby shifted slightly, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.
