Pregnant teenager accused of joining pal in OAP con

A HEAVILY pregnant teenager and her friend have been accused of stealing a sum of money from a pair of elderly ladies after they allegedly duped their way into the women's house looking for milk for a young baby, a court heard.

Dadina Gheorghe (18) and Claudia Dragusin (24) were allegedly followed by a concerned neighbour, who also alerted gardai, and the money was later found hidden in the child's buggy.

Dragusin, of Celbridge Road in Maynooth, and Gheorghe, of Woodavens in Clondalkin, appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with burglary.

Dragusin is also accused of handling stolen property in the same incident.

The alleged incident took place at a house in Churchtown on October 10 last. The court heard that the DPP has directed summary disposal of the matter in the District Court.

Outlining the facts for the purpose of jurisdiction, Sergeant Carmel Henry alleged the two women turned up at a house in Churchtown shortly after 2pm, asking for milk for their baby.

Sgt Henry said it is alleged that one of the women distracted the occupants of the house, two elderly women in their seventies, while the other stole €100 from a purse in the sitting room.

The sergeant claimed that the women, who are both Romanian, were followed by a concerned neighbour and the money was later found by gardai hidden in the hood on the top of the child's buggy.

Judge James McDonnell said he would accept jurisdiction.

Gheorghe, who is due a child in March, has denied the charge and the case was adjourned for hearing to a date in April.

Dragusin's solicitor Kevin Tunney said he has not yet received disclosure in relation to the matter, and so Dragusin's matter was adjourned for three weeks to allow the gardai to furnish Mr Tunney with all documents in relation to the charges.
